Each Cystopurin sachet contains 3g of the active ingredient, Potassium Citrate BP. In addition each sachet contains mannitol (E421), citric acid (E330), aspartame (E951), natural cranberry flavours (flavours contain cranberry extracts with sugar and ethanol). Contains a source of phenylalanine. Harmful for people with phenylketonurea.

Indication:

Symptomatic relief of cystitis

Dosage:

One sachet dissolved in water 3 times a day for 2 days. All 6 must be taken to complete the treatment.

Caution:

Consult a doctor first in kidney or heart disease and before use by men or children. Not recommended for children under 6 years. Patients should seek medical advice if symptoms persist after 48 hours.

Why do I need this medicine?
Potassium Citrate helps to relieve discomfort associated with mild urinary tract infections.

It is also used to prevent the formation of certain types of kidney stones.

How do I take this medicine?
Take Potassium Citrate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. Do not take it for a longer period than prescribed by your doctor. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

Take Potassium Citrate together with food or immediately after a meal, with plenty of water.

Potassium Citrate is available as tablets and in solution (syrup) form.

If you have been given tablets, swallow them whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew or suck them. Inform your doctor if you have difficulty swallowing the tablets or if they get stuck in the throat.

If you have been given the solution (syrup), dilute each dose with water before you take it. Drink lots of water after taking it.

When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have heart disease, especially palpitations or abnormal heart rhythm.

Also alert your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, stomach problems such as ulcers, bowel blockage, severe indigestion or regurgitation of food, or if you have a problem with the adrenal gland known as Addison's disease.

Inform your doctor if you often become dehydrated or suffer from cramps or high blood potassium levels.

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have diabetes or chronic swelling of the legs or feet.

For as long as you are taking Potassium Citrate, you may need to have regular blood tests to make sure that the potassium levels in your blood are normal. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these blood tests.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What side effects could I experience?
You may experience stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.

Alert your doctor quickly if you notice unusual bleeding when moving your bowels, or if your stools are sticky and black in colour.

Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease e.g. digoxin, spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride, captopril, enalapril, lisinopril and other similar medicines.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements (especially potassium supplements) and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Do not take potassium supplements unless instructed by your doctor.

Do not take salt substitutes or low-salt milk. Check with your doctor first as these may contain potassium.



How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
