Why do I need this medicine?
Sodium Citrate helps to prevent the formation of certain types of kidney stones.
It may also be used to treat certain conditions of the blood and urine, for example, if the urine is too acidic. Such conditions may occur in people who have kidney disease.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Sodium Citrate exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. Do not take it for a longer period than prescribed by your doctor. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
Take Sodium Citrate together with food or within 30 minutes after a meal or bedtime snack. This may help to minimise any diarrhoea that Sodium Citrate may cause.
Be sure to take it with plenty of water.
Sodium Citrate is available as tablets and in solution (syrup) form.
If you have been given tablets, swallow them whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew them.
If you have been given the solution (syrup), dilute each dose with water before you take it. Drink plenty of water. You may refrigerate the oral solution before taking it, as the cold solution would taste less unpleasant.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have heart or kidney disease, high blood pressure or if you are on a salt-restricted diet.
Alert your doctor if you suffer from water retention which causes swelling of your legs or feet.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
For as long as you are taking Sodium Citrate, you may need to have regular blood tests to monitor your condition. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these blood tests.
Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
What side effects could I experience?
You may experience diarrhoea and stomach discomfort.
Alert your doctor quickly if you develop severe stomach pain or stomach cramps, severe vomiting, or if your stools are sticky and black in colour.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
